The Big Plastic Count

LET’S INVESTIGATE TO STOP THE PLASTICS CRISIS

For one week in March, thousands of people will be counting every piece of plastic packaging they throw away. Together, we’ll uncover the true scale of the UK’s big plastic problem and call on the government to do more about it.

We’re not just counting plastic – we’re building a movement for a fair future that’s free from the impacts of the plastics crisis.

We are now a Silver Eco Church

Find out what it means and how we worked together to achieve our Silver Eco Church Award.

In His hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are His also. The sea is His, for He made it, and the dry land, which His hands have formed.

  • What is a Carbon Footprint?
  • What is the impact of your Carbon Footprint?
  • Can you reduce your negative impact on the environment?
  • Want to calculate YOUR household's Carbon Footprint?
  • Which changes will you make first?
  • What is a Carbon Footprint?

Almost everything you do releases some amount of carbon or other 'greenhouse gasses' into the atmosphere, but how much carbon you generate depends on a huge number of factors. This means that you have lots of opportunities to increase or decrease the impact of your carbon footprint with your every day choices.

What is the impact of your Carbon Footprint?

The environment is God's gift to everyone and we have a responsibility towards each other to protect it. We cannot think of ourselves as isolated from others or from creation.

Our collective impact on the planet is reducing biodiversity, changing the climate and polluting the earth.

Around the world, climate change is affecting food security, crating social vulnerability and disrupting peace and security. there is no doubt we need to act.

We believe that responding to climate change is an essential part of our responsibility to safeguard God's creation.

Can you reduce your negative impact on the environment?

This is where there is good news.

Almost every action to reduce your personal Carbon Footprint will have a positive impact:

  • Reducing air pollution improves your health.
  • Saving energy saves you money.
  • Eating less meat and more vegetables is good for you.
  • Buying Fairtrade produce supports sustainable food production.
  • Want to calculate YOUR household's Carbon Footprint?

When you want to reduce your carbon footprint, it's a great idea to know it's size right now. Over time, you'll be able to assess the impact of the lifestyle changes you choose to make.

The Church of England Environment and Climate Change programme recommends using an online calculator tool found on the World Wildlife Fund. The calculator uses a multi-choice questionnaire to assess all relevant aspects of your lifestyle, including:

  • Diet
  • Travel
  • Energy use
  • Buying habits
  • It takes about 15 minutes to complete the questionnaire and discover the size of your Carbon Footprint.

Once you have your score, you'll be able to assess which changes you can make and understand what difference those changes might make to your overall Footprint.

Which changes will you make first?

Some changes might seem easy, others might be harder. We hope you want your choices to be sustainable -- so we recommend starting small. Enjoy the reward of getting a few easy wins under your belt as you make them part of the way you live now.

Remember to talk about reducing your Carbon Footprint with the people in your household and with your friends. You aren't alone!

We would love to know what changes you choose to make - which ones seem easy and which ones do you need help with? Please share your thoughts with us, so that as a Church family we can support and encourage each other along the way.

If you need a hand to complete the questionnaire or have any questions, please contact us.

Let us know how you get on!
